Honoring Juneteenth

Exemplifying Black Courage and Resilience

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX finally learned of their legal liberation – more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. To commemorate this day of freedom, we lift the voices of a few of our many students who exemplify Black courage and resilience.

The Impact Naturopathic Medicine Can Have on the Black Community

“The Black community is plagued with a considerable amount of chronic diseases like diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, and congestive heart failure that have been going on in our families for generations. A naturopathic medical doctor’s training encompasses effective modalities in preventing and treating the chronic diseases our people commonly experience. I believe with an increase in Black physicians, we will have a greater impact in healing our communities.”

Why There Isn’t a Better Time for Black Students to Pursue Naturopathic MedicineSonoran | Clara Sartor

“You should be aware that Black people, and diversity in general, are vastly underrepresented in the administration and faculty of ND schools as well as the professional community of NDs themselves. This can be extremely disheartening and frustrating, however I believe it’s exactly for this reason that we need more Black NDs to step up and join the field.

Once I graduate, I will be one of the providers who works to build trust and to heal and not hurt the Black community and others who have been marginalized and systematically mistreated. And my last bit of advice would be to take care of yourself, because you matter and you’re important and so is your mental and overall health.”
