Advice for Future Physicians & Shared Experiences

Medicine Is a Journey, Not a Checklist

At the recent ASU Black Medical Student Association (BMSA) panel, naturopathic physician, Dr. Cintara Bradley (Class of 2024) shared an inspiring perspective on navigating the medical journey, especially for those taking nontraditional routes. Her story is a powerful reminder that medicine is not a destination, but a lifelong journey of growth and self-discovery.

Dr. Bradley's Journey

Dr. Bradley began her career on the allopathic side, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and  completed a clinical fellowship. But along the way, she realized something was missing. Taking time away from the traditional path allowed her to rediscover herself and ultimately led her to naturopathic medicine, a field that aligned with her values and vision for patient care.

Her advice? Don’t rush the process. Medical school will always be there. Instead of viewing each step as a box to check, embrace the journey.

“Every experience, whether in school, residency, or practice, shapes the physician you are meant to become.”

– Cintara Bradley, ND

Prioritize Your "Why" and Self-Care

Burnout is real, and Dr. Bradley emphasized the importance of identifying your “why.” Whether it’s a personal health experience, a desire to serve your community, or a commitment to advancing care, keeping your purpose front and center will sustain you through challenging times.

She also stressed the need for self-care. During her training, she invested in a sauna membership, a simple but powerful way to recharge. Whether it’s connecting with friends, engaging in hobbies, or finding spiritual grounding, prioritizing yourself ensures you can pour into others without running empty.

Building Resilience for the Future

With alarming rates of primary care physicians leaving the profession, Dr. Bradley urged students to lay a strong foundation now. Mastering self-care and resilience early will help future physicians thrive in a demanding field while continuing to serve their communities with excellence.
