The Benefits of Sleeping Naked

The Benefits of Sleeping Naked

Only about 8% of people sleep naked, but it turns out that more of us should be ditching pajamas! Sleeping in the buff provides a number of benefits that many people do not know about.

If you’ve ever had your air conditioning go out in the summer, you know that it can be difficult to go to sleep when it is too hot.  Many of the positive results of sleeping naked relate to body temperature.  A study conducted at the University of Amsterdam showed that lowering your skin temperature increases the quality of your sleep and reduces the number of times you wake up during the night.  Sleeping naked will help you to stay cooler and therefore sleep better.  Proper sleep is vital to maintaining good physical and mental health.

Not only does keeping yourself cool help you to sleep better, it also benefits your metabolism.  A study conducted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health found that staying cool while you sleep speeds up your body’s metabolism because your body creates more brown fat in order to keep you warm.  That may seem like a bad thing, as most people want to avoid gaining fat, but not all fat is the same.  White fat is the type of fat that everyone wants to avoid, but brown fat is different.  Brown fat is most prominent in newborn mammals (including humans), where its main function is to generate body heat. This helps newborns to regulate their body temperature.  Brown fat creates this heat by burning calories.  By staying cool when you sleep your body produces more brown fat which subsequently speeds up your metabolism.

Give sleeping naked a try and see if it improves your quality of sleep!
