The Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research studied whether a commercial product, OBLUE White Tomato Pine Bark Brightening Drink, can potentially help reduce dark spots and protect the skin. Our scientists first tested the product in vitro on skin cells in a lab and confirmed that it was not harmful at certain doses. They then found that the drink significantly reduced melanin production, the substance that causes skin pigmentation, by about 77–82%, similar to a known pharmaceutical skin-lightening ingredient. In addition, the product showed strong antioxidant activity, meaning it can help protect skin cells from damage caused by UV exposure. Overall, the results suggest that the drink may help brighten skin and reduce dark spots while also providing some protection against sun-related skin damage.
