The Kanara Family

Scholarship Endowment

Julie Kanara established the Kanara Family Scholarship in loving memory of her sister, Dr. Jessica Ann Pye (38), who passed away on July 28, 2023. Julie appreciates the support and compassion her Sonoran University colleagues provided throughout Jessica’s journey. It is Julie’s hope that this story honors the memory of her sister and inspires future naturopathic physicians on the profound differences they make in people’s lives.

Recent Recipient - Rodney Garrick Jr.

My path toward naturopathic medicine was shaped by lived experiences, caring for my mother, a stroke survivor, and witnessing firsthand the gaps and inequities in our healthcare system. These moments deepened my conviction that medicine must go beyond treating symptoms; it must honor the whole person, restore dignity, and provide hope. At Sonoran, I have been privileged to serve as a teaching assistant in anatomy and physiology, host mindfulness sessions, and teach community yoga classes; roles that have strengthened my clinical skills while allowing me to support others on their own healing journeys.

Since beginning this journey, I have sought to embody leadership through service. I have supported students as a teaching assistant in anatomy lab and human physiology, led yoga and meditation sessions for peers, and advocated for greater diversity and representation through lived and shared experiences, ensuring that the communities I belong to are seen and valued within our profession. These roles have strengthened my clinical foundation while allowing me to uplift others in our community.

As a future Naturopathic physician, I bring a lived understanding of the need for culturally competent, integrative, and compassionate care. My long-term vision is to establish a multidisciplinary wellness center and teaching hospital that blends regenerative medicine, nutrition, acupuncture, and mind-body care. I aspire to support future colleagues to be both skilled clinicians and emotionally attuned, visionary leaders.
